This course provides students with a fundamental grasp of the application of the scientific method to the study of psychology. Topics include: research methodology, biological bases of animal and human behavior, nature and nurture, intelligence, emotions, stress and health and introduction to psychological disorders.

Course Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Objectively observe and measure behavior.

  • Recognize human bias when making decisions in everyday life.

  • Apply scientific methods and knowledge as a tool in making decisions and evaluating situations.

  • Discuss the ambiguity in defining and assessing constructs such as intelligence and motivation and communicate how the environment and genetics might interact to affect these constructs.

  • Identify the major issues, tasks and milestones of human development, such as physical, cognitive, social and emotional throughout the lifespan.
