This course explores the connection between genetics and psychology, reviewing topics such as behavior, personality, intelligence, health and disease, and nature versus nurture. Students will gain a strong grounding in basic concepts in genetics, including Mendelian genetics and how traits are passed down, as well as autosomal vs. x-linked disorders. The course also reviews pregnancy, birth, fertility, genetic diseases, and prenatal diagnosis. The course will also address coping with genetic disorders and the impact on individuals and families.

Course Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate fundamental knowledge and comprehension of the basics of genetics and how the field intersects with psychology: behavioral genetics, intelligence, health, personality.

  • Demonstrate the effective use of scientific / statistical reasoning and information literacy skills. When discussing complex issues related to genetics and psychology, they will be able to evaluate all sides of an issue and come to a conclusion based on empirical evidence rather than biased opinions or anecdotal evidence.

  • Apply the knowledge gained about genetics to everyday life and understand ethical dilemmas in the field. They will understand the range of impact from mild to severe and apply principles to their own life and family and will learn how to create a pedigree. They will understand the effect on families and the physical, emotional, and psychological burden of genetic disorders.

  • Demonstrate effective communication skills as it relates to how they communicate (either through written assignments or direct discussion with others) and key concepts in the areas of behavioral psychology and genetics.
